Appeal means that a person writes to an authority or court to say that they do no agree with the decision made by that authority or court and they want the authority or court to change the decision.
Asexual means people who do not feel interested in having sex or do not feel sexually attracted to others.
Asylum means refuge. When a person seeks asylum, that person is seeking protection in another country than in the country they lived in before Sweden.
Asylum process refers to the different stages that an asylum seeker goes through from the application to the final decision/refusal that person receives from the Migration Agency.
Asylum seeker means a person who has arrived in Sweden and is seeking protection. This person has not received a final response to their application.
Authority means a state agency that is run by the government. The authorities must ensure that society works as it should do according to the laws determined by the parliament.
Bisexual means people who fall in love with or are sexually attracted to people, regardless of gender. All people have the right to define themselves.
Cis person means, in a very simplified form, a person that is not a trans person. Quite simply a person whose body, legal gender and gender identity match according to the norms.
Daily allowance is a benefit that asylum seekers can apply for if they do not have any money of their own.
Decision in an asylum case is when the personnel at the Migration Agency have made a decision that an asylum seeker can remain in Sweden or not.
Gender consists of four different parts: gender identity (mental gender), gender expression (social gender), assigned gender (biological gender) and legal gender. Gender identity is the gender that you feel you are and identify with, or if you do not identify yourself with any gender. Gender expression relates to how you express your gender and the gender that others see you as. Assigned gender is the gender that you are given when you are born. Legal gender is the gender you are given in the population register, for example on you ID documents and passport. Read more about gender in the glossary.
Gender confirmation therapy is a collective term for different methods of changing the body so that it conforms with the gender identity. This could be, for example, hormone therapy, different types of surgery, permanent hair removal or voice and communication training.
Heteronorms lead to people who do not fit into the model by not conforming to the norms for gender and sexuality to be disadvantaged and be at a greater risk of being subject to invisibility, harassment and violence. At the same time, it means that people who follow norms in different ways are advantaged and obtain privileges from this. Heteronorms, in other words, have an effect, regardless of whether you are within the norm or you do not conform to it.
Homosexual (lesbian or gay) means people who fall in love with or are sexually attracted by persons with the same gender as themselves. All people have the right to define themselves.
Judgement in an asylum case is when the Migration Court or Migration Court of Appeal has reviewed whether an asylum seeker is permitted to remain in Sweden or not after an appeal.
Litigation officer is a person who speaks on behalf of the Migration Agency in a migration court.
Pronoun means, for example, he, she and they – the term someone wants to be called when they are talked about in the third person (for example: that person is kind, I like them). Pronouns can be linked to your gender/gender identity, but they do not need to be. If you are not certain about someone’s pronoun, you can ask in a separate conversation (for example: ”Which pronoun do you have?/Which pronoun do you want me to use with you”).
Public counsel means a person who knows Swedish laws. That person can help asylum seekers with the asylum application. A public counsel is a lawyer or an attorney.
Queer is a difficult term to define. It may refer to identity, sexuality or sexual practice. For example, if you do not want to conform to heteronorms or use another term to describe yourself instead of a specific gender affiliation or sexual orientation, you can use queer.
Refugee means a person who has applied for asylum and is permitted to remain in Sweden based on the reasons for seeking refuge.
Refusal of asylum application means that a person has received the answer “no” to their application for asylum. This person is not permitted to remain in Sweden.
Residence permit means that a person has received the answer “yes” to their application for asylum. This person is permitted to remain in Sweden.
Sexual orientation can be divided into different parts: sexual interest (which person or people someone wants to have sex with), romantic interest (which person or people someone falls in love with), sexual practice (which person or people someone has sex with), romantic practice (which person or people someone has loving relationships with) and identity (whether and how someone describes their sexual orientation).
are available in every municipality. The staff work according to a law called the Social Services Law. The Social Services Law deals with the right to health and social care available to everyone in the municipality. It includes rules for how society must assist everyone who needs help and cannot get help from anywhere else.
Suspension means that the Migration Agency or a Migration Court decides to suspend a person’s journey back to their home country or to another country temporarily.
The Aliens Act is a law which contains, among other things, the rules for whether an asylum seeker is permitted to remain in Sweden or not. The parliament passes laws.
Trans person is an umbrella term that aims to include the wide variety of identities, groups and persons that use the term trans to identify themselves. The common factor for trans persons is that a person’s gender identity and/or gender expression does not match the legal gender that was assigned at birth, and which was determined by that person’s physical appearance and was interpreted at that time. The term trans person includes people who want to change their body and change legal gender (transexual), people who do not want to be either a woman or a man (for example bigender, gender queer, non-binary, intergender), people who use clothes and other attributes that are usually seen as typical for a different genders than the one that was assigned (cross dresser, transvestite), artists who exaggerate gender-coded attributes when they perform (drag) and people who do not want to, cannot or think that it is not important to define themselves in terms of gender (for example agender, non-binary, neutrois, nongender). Trans has no relation to sexuality, it relates to gender identity. A trans person could be homosexual, heterosexual, bisexual, asexual or something else.
Trustee means a person who takes care of the interests of a child seeking asylum when their parents are not able to do this.
